USS Arizona Memorial at Salt River Fields - IES Phoenix-80th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor attack
The Public Art Series is an online tour of some of the most intriguing lighting designs of the world. This edition is an intimate tour of the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale, Arizona. It's no coincidence that the video was first published on the 80th Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941. The USS Arizona Memorial Gardens at Salt River honors the brave US forces who were aboard the USS Arizona during the attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941. The USS Arizona Memorial Gardens is a 5 acre development that features a piece of the original boathouse of the USS Arizona that sank at Pearl Harbor in 1941. The Gardens were built around the boat house relic, which is enclosed in a glass case and can be seen at anytime, even when the relic room is not open. This presentation was hosted by the Phoenix Section of the IES (Illuminating Engineers Society) and led by Aaron Allan, PLA, of J2 Engineering & Environmental Design, lead landscape architect and project manager for the full memorial gardens design, along with Cliff Tolman, PE, of Wright Engineering, electrical engineer and lighting design manager for the project. Aaron and Cliff discuss the history and development of the USS Arizona Memorial project. The presentation will includes a brief description of how the artifact from the USS Arizona was recovered and became part of this project, and the inspiration behind the memorial, the process of making the concept for the memorial a reality and all the challenges, lighting design considerations, mock-ups, fabrication, and installation. Aaron Allan, PLA, ASLA is a Vice President Principal Landscape Architect at J2 Design. Aaron has a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from Arizona State University.
