We have been trialling and testing a range of very impressive zoysia grasses at our research and development facility here over many years and one particular strain of grass has shown some exceptional qualities that you wouldn’t commonly associate with zoysia grasses. I’m sure you have heard of TifTuf, well Zoysia Australis was bred at the world-famous University of Georgia, by the award-winning turf scientist Dr. Brian Schwartz. So you can be confident in the research that has gone into developing this ground breaking new grass. Zoysia Australis as we named it here in Australia, was a standout performer in the grasses trialled in his US breeding program. From this success, the grass was propagated out into larger trials before being planted by the largest turf grower in the US for further assessments. Zoysia Australis was so impressive that the owner of this turf farm laid it at his own home and in several other home lawns to see how it would perform in real-life situations. The results confirmed everything they were hoping for, this grass truly was something special. Lawn Solutions Australia through its exclusive partnerships with this breeding program was able to bring Zoysia Australis, along with 17 other very impressive zoysias here in 2018 for trials in Australian conditions. While this grass performed great in the US, it was important to see if it would do the same here. Over the next few years of trials, Zoysia Australis certainly didn’t disappoint. Zoysia Australis has shown superior wear tolerance and recovery compared to the other grasses in trials across multiple Australian states. It has demonstrated its ability to perform and thrive in the Australian climate, just as it did during trials in the US. To confirm our findings, we submitted all of the zoysias into an independent trial conducted by the Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI) ‘Screening new Zoysia turfgrasses under Australian conditions.’ Zoysia Australis showed some exceptional qualities, confirming that this grass was different to what we presently have available making it a beneficial alternative for release. For speed of establishment, Zoysia Australis (cultivar ZJ-19-017) was one of the fastest cultivars to reach establishment in the first 12 months of evaluation reaching 95% of establishment. Zoysis Australis also showed an incredible speed of recovery after spring renovation. These results demonstrate the unique characteristics that Zoysia Australis has, traits that are not normally associated with other zoysia grasses. It truly has redefined what we have come to expect with zoysias and what can be achieved through world-class breeding programs. We are so excited to release Zoysia Australis here in Australia.
