The popular manga "The Promised Neverland" (story by Kaiu Shirai, art by Posuka Demizu), which has sold over 26 million copies worldwide, has been adapted into a live-action film, currently in theaters. The orphans at the paradise-like orphanage "Grace Field House" dream of one day being adopted by foster parents, but Emma (Minami Hamabe), Ray (Jokairi), and Norman (Rihito Itagaki) discover that the orphanage is actually a farm where children are raised for food to be offered to demons, and they begin planning an escape with all the orphans. The main character, Ray, is played by Kairi Jō, who gained attention for his role in Hirokazu Koreeda's "Shoplifters," which won the Palme d'Or at the 71st Cannes Film Festival. Jō plays Ray, a cool, pragmatic boy who also plays a key role at the Grace Field House orphanage. We interviewed Jō about the appeal of the film and the filming process.
