How Did Homosexuality Begin in Humans?
When did homosexuality begin? Was it something that appeared only in modern society? Or does same-sex attraction go much deeper into human history? If we go back thousands of years, before cities, written laws, and modern identity labels, early humans were already living in small social groups where survival depended on trust, bonding, cooperation, child care, food sharing, and emotional connection. So how could homosexuality appear in humans in the first place? In this video, we explore the ancient roots of homosexuality and same-sex attraction, looking at human biology, early development, genetics, social bonding, animal behavior, and the deep evolutionary history of human connection. Science does not point to one simple cause. Large genetic studies suggest that same-sex sexual behavior is influenced by many genetic variants with small effects, along with non-genetic factors. Research on sexual orientation also shows that attraction is not usually understood as a simple conscious choice, but as something shaped by a complex mix of biology, development, and environment. Same-sex sexual behavior has also been observed in many animal species, especially among social mammals and primates. These examples do not directly explain human identity, but they do show that same-sex behavior is not outside nature. The word “homosexuality” is modern. But the biology behind attraction, bonding, and human variation may be much older than most people think. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ SOURCES ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ SEXUAL ORIENTATION AND HUMAN BIOLOGY ▸ American Psychological Association — “Understanding sexual orientation and homosexuality” ▸ APA explains that sexual orientation is commonly understood as an enduring pattern of attraction and that researchers generally discuss it as shaped by complex biological, psychological, and environmental factors. GENETICS OF SAME-SEX SEXUAL BEHAVIOR ▸ Ganna, A. et al. “Large-scale GWAS reveals insights into the genetic architecture of same-sex sexual behavior.” Science, 2019. ▸ This large genetic study found that same-sex sexual behavior is influenced by many genetic variants, each with very small effects, and that genetics alone cannot predict a person’s sexual behavior. SAME-SEX SEXUAL BEHAVIOR IN MAMMALS ▸ Gómez, J. M. et al. “The evolution of same-sex sexual behaviour in mammals.” Nature Communications, 2023. ▸ This study discusses same-sex sexual behavior in mammals and notes that it is especially common in some social groups, including primates, where it may be connected to bonding, social tension, or conflict reduction. ANIMAL BEHAVIOR AND UNDERREPORTING ▸ Anderson, K. A. et al. “Same-sex sexual behaviour among mammals is widely observed, yet seldomly reported.” PLOS ONE, 2024. ▸ This research suggests that same-sex sexual behavior in animals may be more widely observed than the scientific literature historically reported. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ #Homosexuality #HumanEvolution #SameSexAttraction #Evolution #AncientHumans #EarlyHumans #HumanBiology #SexualOrientation #Genetics #AnimalBehavior #ScienceExplained #Biology #Whatly
