The Mercedes-Benz R129, represented here by a rather rare 1991 300SL-24, marks a significant phase of technical and stylistic evolution for Mercedes-Benz. It represents the fourth generation of the SL-Class and, in 1989, replaced the R107 series, which had been produced for nearly two decades. Although it retained the basic concept of the open-top two-seater, it represented a decisive advance in technology and design. To examine the development of the SL-Class up to this point, the journey begins in 1954 with the first generation, the "Super Leicht" (hence the name SL) W198 with a 6-cylinder inline engine, better known as the "300 SL" (including the famous Gullwing coupé), and its little brother, the "190 SL," with a four-cylinder engine. In 1963, the second generation, the W113, entered the scene and earned the nickname "Pagoda" thanks to its distinctive hardtop design (230SL, 250SL, 280SL, all with six-cylinder engines). The third generation, the R107 series, followed in 1971 and offered a wider selection of models and engines (6- and 8-cylinder) than its predecessors, as well as the closed four-seat coupé variant SLC (C107). This 300SL-24 from 1991 is equipped with the rather rare 6-cylinder inline engine with 24 valves. This engine was designed as a sports engine, revs accordingly higher than the 12-valve version, and also works perfectly with a manual transmission. For the R129 series, Mercedes, as with the W201 (190) and W124 models, used The innovative independent independent rear axle provides a significant improvement in roadholding and driving stability compared to the semi-trailing arm rear axle of the R107 series. The R129 also set new standards in terms of safety. It was the first SL-Class to offer automatic rollover protection and innovative seat belt feeders as standard, revolutionizing safety in convertibles.
