João Pinheiro, MG – Mesorregião Noroeste de Minas
MINEIRIZANTE - Cities and places to visit, live, and invest in Minas Gerais The NAECO Channel presents the municipality of João Pinheiro in the Northwest Mesoregion of Minas Gerais. Filmed on highways and access roads, avenues, streets, and squares, it features panoramic drone flights in urban and rural areas, narrated with historical details of the municipality's origins, and an illustrative map with geographic references to rivers, highways, territorial boundaries, population, altitude, and economic resources. How to get there: João Pinheiro is accessible via highway BR-040 between the cities of Três Marias and Paracatu and is 400 km from the capital, Belo Horizonte. History: The region where the municipality of João Pinheiro originated was inhabited by natives of the Cataguá tribe, through which expeditions of bandeirantes from São Paulo passed, heading towards Goiás, beginning in the second half of the 18th century. In addition to the native villages, some runaway slaves formed small groups and settled in the region. In 1830, a settlement began to emerge on the trail used by bandeirantes and tropeiros between the mines of Paracatu and the city of Goiás, starting from an inn where diamond prospectors and settlers settled, creating farms and raising animals for subsistence, on the banks of a stream that tributaries the Paracatu River. Santana dos Alegres was the original name of the settlement that belonged to the municipality of Paracatu, a name given to the frequent visit of a wild ox to the inn's corral, which would low all night. The town of Santana dos Alegres developed with the increased traffic in the region, selling food and diamonds to travelers, becoming a district of Paracatu in 1873. On August 30, 1911, it separated from Paracatu and became a municipality under the name of João Pinheiro in honor of the former governor of Minas Gerais. Population, area, altitude, river, and neighboring municipalities: Today, October 2025, the municipality of João Pinheiro has a population of approximately 46,801 inhabitants. It is the largest municipality in terms of land area, with 10,727.097 km², at an altitude of 765 m. Located in the Northwest Mesoregion of Minas Gerais, it is bathed by streams and tributaries of the Paracatu River, which belong to the São Francisco River basin. The municipalities bordering João Pinheiro are: Buritizeiro, São Gonçalo do Abaeté, Varjão de Minas, Presidente Olegário, Lagoa Grande, Paracatu, Unaí, and Brasilândia de Minas. Economy: The basis of the economy of João Pinheiro is agriculture, industry, commerce, and services. As the largest municipality in the state of Minas Gerais and located on the access route to major consumer centers, João Pinheiro enjoys the privilege of being a commercial and cultural hub. Agribusiness highlights dairy and beef cattle farming, as well as the production of eucalyptus, sugarcane, grains, and fruits. The existing clothing industries also contribute significantly to the municipality's workforce and revenue. Mining is an activity that has attracted significant interest from investors, and its potential certainly holds significant potential to become a major contributor to the municipality's revenue. Tourism, anywhere in the world, is one of the most invested activities, and many don't have the privilege we have of the natural beauty of mountains, caves, rivers, waterfalls, lakes, and valleys. These, combined with historical attractions and events, are only less valuable due to a lack of investment in visitor services. Filming and describing the 853 cities of Minas Gerais, with each visit and the reactions in the comments about the cities, makes me rethink concepts of religion, politics, and citizenship. Believing that you would also like to make these in-person visits, but recognize that it is very expensive, time-consuming, and tiring, is what most encourages me to continue.
