The First Tape “Emulator” That Actually Fooled Me | Walters Audio T805

The Walters Audio T805 may be the first tape "emulator" I’ve used that doesn’t just sound like analog tape, it actually behaves like a real tape machine. Let's put the Walters Audio T805 through a wide range of real-world tests on drums, acoustic guitar, individual tracks, drum busses, and full mixes. We’ll hear how it handles tape saturation, harmonic distortion, transient control, soft compression, stereo imaging, low-mid weight, high-frequency smoothing, and the unmistakable character associated with recording to analog tape. As someone who has recorded with the Tascam MSR-24, worked with an Otari MTR-90 2-inch tape machine, owned several reel-to-reel recorders, mixed music recorded to tape, and used analog tape transfers on full mixes, I’m very familiar with both the sound and behavior of magnetic tape. The T805 captures details I have rarely heard from tape plugins or conventional analog tape saturation hardware, including the way tape reshapes transients, adds density, gives thin recordings more authority, and subtly changes the stereo image. Unlike many hardware tape emulators that use transformers, saturation circuits, EQ curves, and soft clipping to approximate the sound of tape saturation, the T805 uses a stationary magnetic tape element and recreates key circuitry found inside an actual analog tape recorder. Walters Audio describes this technology as Full Spectrum Magnetization: A physics based approach designed to recreate the nonlinear behavior of magnetic recording without moving tape, recording heads, expensive maintenance, or constantly replacing reels. We’ll also explore the T805’s gain and bias controls, including how higher bias settings can produce a cleaner, more modern tape sound, while lower bias settings introduce additional color, grit, compression, and harmonic distortion.
