The Language of Mothers (Short Film)

In The Language of Mothers, Ava Mitchell-Park, a pregnant Black American woman, struggles to connect with her Korean husband's mother, Mrs. Park, who moves in to help before the baby arrives. With no shared language between them, their relationship unfolds through food, routine, touch, silence, and care. What begins as tension slowly becomes understanding, leading to an emotional turning point during labor when the mother-in-law becomes the strongest support in the room. This short film explores motherhood, cultural difference, family boundaries, and the universal language of caregiving. Through intimate performances and quiet visual storytelling, the film asks a simple question: how do people learn to love each other when words are not enough? A story about cross-cultural family dynamics, pregnancy and motherhood, mother-in-law relationships, emotional silence and nonverbal connection, & love expressed through caregiving.
