Propagating bamboo is a great way to get more bamboo growing in your garden without spending money on buying it. Last year I tried a few different methods of propagating bamboo. This year I'm tweaking the most successful of them with the aim of improving the results. We have a stand of lovely tall, thick bamboo in our garden. It lines the driveway along one side of our property and leads from the house to the cacti greenhouses. There are a few gaps that I want to fill, so I am trying out a few different methods of propagating the bamboo. Our bamboo is a clumping type. It does not spread aggressively like the type that sends our runners, or rhizomes, that reach far from the mother plant. Clumping bamboo sends our shoots close to the clump and is easier to constrain. This is not a problem for us as there are no buildings or concreted areas close to where the bamboo is planted. There are a variety of ways to propagate bamboo that all appear to work well. In the wet season, bamboo grows very quickly and this is also the best time to propagate bamboo. Given the right growing conditions bamboo is easy and effective to grow. This is wonderful agricultural technology that does not require any special training or equipment. You'll see in the video that I recycle a discarded face mask as part of my bamboo propagation method.
