This is really an almost lost TV episode pilot we ran across in our film archives. Town With A Past western TV series episode pilot starring James Stewart, Beulah Bondi, Edgar Buchanan, Walter Sande, Fred Wayne, Chuck Roberson, Greg Barton and Will Wright. This was originally released February 10 of 1957. This is James Stewart bringing his radio series character Britt Ponset aka The Six Shooter to television. The nearest I can figure James Stewart starred and or co-starred in around 72 westerns. 19 movies, 6 episodes of a TV mini series, 1 Animated feature, 39 episodes of The Six Shooter radio show, At least 3 other radio western episodes and 4 western TV episodes. In 1957 James Stewart and John Payne both brought The Six Shooters Britt Ponset to life on the television screen. The John Payne episode was titled The Restless Gun and Payne would later bring the Six Shooter to the TV weekly with his name changed to Vint Bonner and the series re-titled, The Restless Gun. The 1957 James Stewart episode is titled Town with a Past. Stewart had done a previous western TV episode titled The Windmill. But although his name in Windmill is Joe Newman a man confronts him about being a fast gun, who used to ride and raid along the border, stating that man called himself Joe Blount. Windmill is an excellent episode and is very reminiscent of and seems it could be a continuation of Bend of the River because this same sort of exchange happens between him and and Arthur Kennedy's character. Town with a Past episode was based on the radio episode Silver Annie.
