Walking Through the Real Kargil Battlefield | Stories of Brave Soldiers
In this video, we explore the Dras battlefield of the Kargil War (1999) — one of the most intense high-altitude battle zones in modern military history. From the memorial in Dras, the towering peaks of the battlefield are visible — Tololing, Point 5140, Tiger Hill, and Point 4875 (Batra Top). These mountains witnessed extraordinary courage as Indian soldiers climbed near-vertical rock faces under heavy enemy fire to reclaim strategic heights that had been occupied during the conflict. At altitudes between 14,000 and 17,000 feet, soldiers fought in freezing temperatures, carrying over 30 kilograms of equipment, assaulting heavily fortified enemy positions on the high ground. The battles fought in this sector became defining moments of the Kargil War. Through this battlefield journey, we revisit the key battles that shaped Operation Vijay: • Tololing Complex – one of the earliest and toughest battles in the Dras sector • Point 5140 – where Indian troops achieved a decisive victory and changed the momentum of the war • Tiger Hill – the most iconic and strategically critical peak in the entire conflict • Point 4875 (Batra Top) – the site of one of the fiercest battles of the war We also highlight the courage and sacrifice of soldiers from units such as 18 Grenadiers, 2 Rajputana Rifles, 13 Jammu & Kashmir Rifles, Garhwal Rifles, Naga Regiment and many others, whose determination and resilience helped reclaim these peaks. This video also tells the stories of some of India’s most decorated war heroes: • Vikram Batra, PVC – remembered for the iconic victory message “Yeh Dil Maange More” • Yogendra Singh Yadav, PVC – who climbed a near-vertical cliff under heavy enemy fire during the assault on Tiger Hill • Sanjay Kumar, PVC – who captured enemy machine-gun positions during the battle of Point 4875 • Manoj Kumar Pandey, PVC – whose leadership in the Batalik sector became a symbol of ultimate courage Today, the Kargil War Memorial in Dras stands as a tribute to the 545 Indian soldiers who laid down their lives during the war. Every name engraved there represents a story of courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to the nation. But this video is not just about the memorial. It is about the battlefield itself, the mountains where these battles were fought, and the stories of the Veer Yoddhas who climbed them against impossible odds. Their bravery continues to inspire generations and remains one of the greatest examples of high-altitude warfare and military leadership in the world. A tribute to the heroes of the Kargil War — and to the men and women of the Indian Armed Forces who continue to guard the nation in some of the toughest terrains on earth. Their courage reminds us that freedom is never free.
