Among other characteristics, high input impedance or resistance is a frequently encountered parameter. For beginning electronics engineers, it's usually meaningless. However, it's a very important characteristic. For measuring devices, particularly voltmeters and oscilloscopes, the higher the input impedance, the better the measurement results, especially for low-voltage signals. Amplifiers also strive for high input impedance, as this allows for amplification of low-power signals. Such signals typically have high internal resistance, so to avoid signal suppression, an amplifier or a separate transistor with high input impedance is required. Also, the higher the input impedance, the less power the circuit or device consumes overall, and therefore, the longer the battery life. Input impedance applies to AC circuits, while input resistance applies to DC circuits, although this isn't a strict rule. 1.
