Upon Abraham Lincoln securing a second presidential term in 1864, John Wilkes Booth and his associates devised a scheme. They intended to abduct Lincoln, subsequently exchanging him with authorities for the liberation of captured Confederate combatants. They additionally prepared multiple backup strategies.
