Original Dairy Queen Sign in Perryopolis, PA | Rick Sebak visits a local landmark

On Route 51 in Perryopolis, about 30 miles south of Pittsburgh, there’s a classic Dairy Queen with a vintage 1963 neon sign on top. Run by Jackie and Doug Horwat, the place attracts locals and folks passing by, many of whom love the old sign, especially at night. The Dairy Queen was built in 1963 by the uncle of Jackie's mother. The neon sign is a rare find, and a glowing example of vintage Americana. It's sat atop the building since it opened and is one of the only Dairy Queens that still has its original neon sign. The town of Perryopolis is also steeped in history, as it was almost chosen as the capital of the United States. George Washington also owned land in the area and even thought that it should be considered as a spot for the new US government.
