SOME SONGS ARE LISTENED TO. OTHERS ARE ALSO VIEWED. We live in a time when songs seem to last as long as a swipe on a screen. They're consumed quickly, forgotten just as fast, and often leave barely enough time to stop and listen. Fakir and the Psychics have decided to take the opposite approach. Their new work, “Love Hurts You Like Lightning,” wasn't conceived as a collection of nine songs, but as a work designed to be experienced from beginning to end. They call it a “novel album,” a term inherited from Mexican cultural tradition that they reclaim to explain something that today seems almost an act of resistance: telling a complete story. But the conversation quickly makes it clear that this definition falls short. WHERE OTHERS SEE FORMATS, THEY SEE STORIES Talking with Fakir and the Psychics is to discover that they never separate music from the rest of the artistic disciplines. The songs engage in a dialogue with the music videos, the music videos are born from cinema, the illustrations form part of the narrative, and everything culminates in building a single creative universe. They don't use audiovisual language simply to accompany an album; they use it because they understand that some stories need more than one language to be told. LUIS BUÑUEL, MEXICAN CINEMA, AND EMOTIONS THAT KNOW NO BORDERS Throughout the interview, references to Mexican cinema of the 1950s and the figure of Luis Buñuel appear repeatedly. It might seem like a simple aesthetic homage: It isn't. What truly fascinates them isn't the sets or the cinematography of those films, but rather their ability to speak about people, their contradictions, their fears, love, pain, and, above all, to demonstrate that there are emotions capable of surviving the passage of time and crossing any border. As they explain during the conversation, there are stories that belong to everyone, regardless of the country or continent where they originated. That idea permeates the entire project and explains why a Spanish filmmaker exiled in Mexico can still engage in dialogue, decades later, with a contemporary Mexican band. A SMALL ACT OF REBELLION There's one particularly revealing answer. When we asked them if releasing a concept album in times of instant gratification constitutes an act of rebellion, they didn't hesitate: Yes. But they don't speak of rebellion as a gesture of opposition; they speak of the need to continue doing what they believe in. Listening to an entire album, building a work, taking risks, dedicating time to every detail. While the industry seems to encourage consuming individual songs, Fakir y los Psíquicos continue to defend the timeless pleasure of letting a story unfold song by song. MORE THAN MUSICIANS Perhaps the phrase that best summarizes the entire interview comes when they acknowledge that they would like to be considered storytellers, and after listening to them, it's difficult to disagree because music never appears alone; it's always accompanied by an image, a film, an illustration, a character, a scene. Everything contributes to building a narrative that transcends boundaries between disciplines. AN IDENTITY THAT ALSO FINDS ITS NAME The conversation ends with a small scoop. The project is now officially called Fakir and the Psychics. Far from being a marketing strategy, the change stems from a much simpler idea. If both projects share the same musicians, the same sensibility, and the same creative DNA… why continue to separate them? The answer with which they close the interview sums up their understanding of art quite well. "What the world needs most is unity." And perhaps that phrase explains the group's spirit much better than any musical label.
