Can architecture be worth travelling across the world for? Join us, Jason & Joyce two architectural designers from New Zealand / Singapore as we explore Naoshima Art Island, Japan's world-famous destination for contemporary architecture, art and design. From Tadao Ando's extraordinary Chichu Art Museum and Lee Ufan Museum to SANAA's beautifully minimalist ferry terminal, we spend two days walking the island in winter, discovering incredible buildings, public artworks and the small architectural details that most visitors walk straight past. Strong winds meant we swapped bicycles for walking, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions of the trip. Along the way we visit Yayoi Kusama's iconic Yellow Pumpkin, wander quiet fishing villages, admire traditional Yakisugi (charred timber) houses, enjoy great local coffee, and share the conversations that naturally happen when we travel together.
