Installing a Furuno SCX-20 – part 1

s05e59 This is arguably the heart and soul of the new system. For those that do not know, this is a satellite compass/GPS antenna. It has 4 GPS antennas, one in each corner of the dome. This gives it a precision that is not possible with other units. Not only does it give the boats heading (yaw), but it also registers pitch, roll and heave with extreme precision. What does all this mean? It means that the sounder can remove all surface movement from the sea floor. No longer will I see rises on the bottom which are in reality caused by the boats motion over the waves. I still don’t have the GPS head unit, but I do have the Furuno autopilot installed and the precision of that is phenomenal! Not only does it respond to heading changes made at the control unit much faster, but it also compensates astoundingly well for wave motion, be it side on or quartering seas. Even without seeing its performance on the MFD, I am absolutely sold on this unit. Worth every penny and a vast improvement over my previous autopilot (it should be given the extra cost).
