Subscribe to The Kennedy Center! http://bit.ly/2gNFrtb Live Tonight on Millennium Stage: Pahua is Paulina Sotomayor, a Mexican percussionist, singer, composer, and DJ whose career spans from the traditional popular music of her country to the trends in global Latin rhythms fused with electronic music. Her career began when, at the age of 7, she joined Mariachi Charanda, a traditional group for which she performed popular songs in Nahuatl and Purépecha. The adventure lasted 12 years. After this experience and already in her adolescence, she learned to play percussion, which would be a fundamental factor in her artistic development. In 2011 she founded the band Jefes del Desierto, of which she was the singer and drummer, and in 2014 she created the electro Latin project Sotomayor, with which she recorded three studio albums (one of them with the multi-Grammy Award®–nominated singer Eduardo Cabra of Calle 13) and toured Mexico, the United States, Central and South America, and Europe. Forged in the pandemic in 2020, Pahua is her solo project, a mix of electronic music with Latin rhythms, empowering lyrics and a message of positivity and self-love. With four EPs, Ofrenda, Ofrenda Remixes, La Cura and Amuleto, one LP, Habita, released by Nacional Records (Los Angeles), and another LP, Habita Remixes, released by Razor N Tape (New York), Pahua has quickly positioned herself as a Mexican pioneer of alternative electronic folk music.
