BERNARDINO DE SAHAGÚN

Fray Bernardino de Sahagún was a Franciscan missionary and author of several works in Nahuatl and Spanish, which are now considered among the most valuable documents for reconstructing the history of ancient Mexico before the arrival of the Spanish. Among his writings, the Historia General de las Cosas de la Nueva España stands out, a true ethnographic monument, composed of twelve books, with hardly any comparable precedents in any language. Sahagún was, in the opinion of Jerónimo de Mendieta, the greatest expert in Nahuatl. He is currently considered the father of modern cultural anthropology.
