Male Calf Baby Elephant Charging in South Africa

In Madikwe Game Reserve we faced a brief encounter within a herd of elephants during a game tour. One male Calf, about a year old, broke from the herd. Dictated by instinct, he gently charged toward the vehicle, ears spread wide, trumpeting in an effort to intimidate us! This humorous display shows signs of how, at an early age, elephants learn instinctual behavior. Murray, our knowledgeable Ranger, described this in more detail. Intimidation is a normal display for baby Calf male elephants.
