Stillwater can be intimidating — there’s no obvious current, everything looks the same, and it’s tough to know where to cast, what flies to use, or if you can just stick with your regular river gear. In this video, we head up to some mountain lakes to show exactly how we approach fly fishing stillwater for trout. No float tubes, no specialized lake setups — just the same rods and reels we use on rivers, plus a handful of flies that have proven themselves time and again. We’ll break down how to find the best spots in a lake, like drop-offs, weed beds, submerged structure, and points. You’ll see the rigs we rely on, from slip-strike indicator setups and hand-twist retrieves to streamers and simple dry-dropper combos. We’ll also cover flies that consistently catch trout in lakes — chironomids, scuds, leeches, and small buggers — along with straightforward retrieves that actually get eats. And once you hook up, we’ll walk through how to fight and land fish in stillwater. If you’re new to lake fly fishing or just want to see how we keep it simple (and still catch fish), this one’s for you. Give it a watch, and if you enjoy it, hit subscribe — we post new fly fishing adventures, tutorials, and gear tips to help you become a better angler.
