Humayun's Tomb is a magnificent Mughal-era monument located in Nizamuddin East, Delhi, India. Built between 1565 and 1572, it serves as the final resting place of Mughal Emperor Humayun and several other prominent members of the royal family. History and Architecture The tomb was commissioned by Humayun's first wife and chief consort, Bega Begum, who chose Persian architect Mirak Mirza Ghiyas to design the structure. After Ghiyas's death, his son Sayyid Muhammad ibn Mirak Ghiyathuddin completed the project. This architectural masterpiece is considered the first garden tomb in India and showcases a blend of Indian and Persian styles. Key Features Design: The tomb stands 47 meters tall and 91 meters wide, with a distinctive double dome structure made of white marble. Materials: The main structure is built using red sandstone, with white marble and yellow sandstone used for detailing. Garden: The Char Bagh garden, a typical Persian layout, symbolizes the Garden of Paradise and adds to the tomb's beauty. Tombs within the Complex: The complex houses over 150 tombs, including those of Bega Begum, Hamida Banu Begum, Dara Shikoh, and other Mughal royals. Other Monuments within the Complex Isa Khan's Tomb and Mosque: Built in 1547, this tomb predates Humayun's Tomb and features a striking octagonal design. Arab Sarai: A resthouse built by Bega Begum for craftsmen working on the tomb. Nila Gumbad: A tomb with unique architecture, built by Abdul Rahim Khan-i-Khana for his servant Fahim Khan. Bu Halima's Garden and Tomb: A garden complex with a tomb, although little is known about Bu Halima. Visiting Information Timings: 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, all days of the week. Entry Fee: ₹40 for Indians, ₹600 for foreign tourists. Nearest Metro Station: JLN Stadium. Significance Humayun's Tomb is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its cultural and historical significance. It has undergone extensive restoration work and serves as an important example of Mughal architecture, influencing later monuments like the Taj Mahal.
