Humberto Correa Gómez violencia y elecciones en Colombia
The first round of the Colombian presidential elections will be held on Sunday, May 29, 2022. According to the latest opinion polls, the ticket of the Historic Pact, composed of Gustavo Petro, former mayor of Bogotá, and Francia Márquez, an environmental activist, feminist, and advocate for the rights of the Afro-Colombian population in Cauca, leads the polls with over 40% of respondents. The challenge for the center-left coalition is to secure the necessary votes to win in the first round, as their chances of victory decrease in a runoff. The electoral process is taking place against a backdrop of escalating armed conflict and systematic violence. Following the recent extradition of Otoniel, alias of Darío Antonio Úsuga, leader of the Clan del Golfo (also known as the Gaitanista Self-Defense Forces of Colombia - AGC), a new wave of violence erupted with the declaration of an armed strike by these paramilitary groups, forcing the population of a vast region in the northwest of the country to a standstill. Humberto Correa Gómez, vice president of UTRADEC (Union of State Workers of Colombia) and human rights secretary of the CGT in his country, arrived in Argentina thanks to international solidarity, where he is in exile with his family. He had to flee Colombia because their lives were at risk; thanks to a leak, it was discovered that the army had him "profiled"—marked and under surveillance by intelligence services. We spoke with him about the electoral landscape and how the 2021 national strike created the opportunity for the popular victory of the Historic Pact with Petro and Márquez. Paramilitary violence as a tool of electoral pressure to favor the right wing; the dismantling of the Peace Accords with the FARC signed during the administration of Juan Manuel Santos.
