History leaps out at us as soon as we arrive in Pozanti. The settlement of the German engineers who oversaw the construction of the Baghdad Railway lies before us in ruins. Not just a lost place, but a link to the shared history of the Ottoman Empire and Germany. Construction on this railway took place before and during the First World War. Many tunnels and bridges had to be designed and built here under the most difficult conditions. Among them is the "German Bridge," the Varda Bridge. Some may recognize it from the James Bond film Skyfall! A German cemetery also bears witness to the losses and accidents that occurred here during construction. By sheer chance, we meet the driver of a work train on this line. And we can hardly believe it when he offers us a ride on his train. This gives us the unique experience of enjoying this remarkable route at a leisurely pace with the best views. We travel through the tunnels and over all the bridges once more. What an experience for our three children and us! You can't get any closer to history combined with railway romance! Background: We're traveling with our three children in a campervan we call Womi-Omi: a self-converted all-wheel-drive truck that was once a fire engine (Magirus Deutz 170D11), for a year through Europe and maybe even further...
