Fixing the Worst Tailstock Design I Have Ever Seen
The tailstock on my mini lathe was unstable and wobbled badly. It did not ride on a proper guide and relied only on a clamp to stay in place. This caused twisting, misalignment, and broken drills. In this video, I redesign and machine a completely new tailstock foot that adds a proper guiding surface, improves rigidity, and allows precise alignment with the headstock. I also add a fine adjustment mechanism so the tailstock can be aligned accurately without frustration. The project includes: • Measuring factory alignment errors • Designing a guided tailstock foot • Machining cast iron parts • Milling deep slots and guide features • Making a new hold down clamp • Adding fine lateral adjustment • Reworking the tailstock base for accuracy • Testing alignment with a dial indicator • Final drilling test under load This modification makes the tailstock slide smoothly, stay aligned, and clamp securely, transforming how the lathe behaves during drilling and setup. If you enjoy precision machining, mini lathe modifications, workshop problem solving, and detailed metalworking projects, this video is for you.
