Flying like a bird is an age-old human dream. Despite a promising start, Icarus failed miserably. Since then, technology has evolved: a paraglider allows you to travel several hundred kilometers, without an engine, without noise… simply by harnessing the wind and thermals. Yet, paragliding remains a niche sport. What is hindering its growth? Too demanding? Too physically demanding? Or too risky? What dangers do pilots face? How can you ensure safety? Author of the book "Managing Risks in Paragliding," Jean-Marc Galan is a CNRS researcher and teacher, specializing in science communication. Jean-Marc has dedicated his research and training skills to his passion: practicing and teaching paragliding. A lecturer and instructor, he is also president of the "Technical and Safety" commission of the French Free Flight Federation (FFVL).
