A tribute to Chilli Komban 🐘 Some elephants become famous because they dominate headlines. Some become unforgettable because they quietly become part of people’s lives. Chilli Komban belonged to the second kind. Chilli Komban wasn’t just another wild elephant people spotted from a distance. For many in Nelliyampathy, he became part of the landscape itself — a familiar giant who moved through the hills quietly and left behind stories instead of fear. Chilli Komban was a wild male elephant that lived around the Nelliyampathy–Anamalai landscape across Kerala and Tamil Nadu. He became known not because he raided villages or created conflict, but almost for the opposite reason — because people who lived near the forest saw him as unusually calm and predictable for a free-ranging tusker. His name came from his tusks. Locals say they were slim and distinctive — giving rise to the name “Chilli Komban” (sometimes explained as tusks resembling thin chillies). Across the border, some people also called him “Sulli Komban.” What made him special was the relationship people felt they had with him. During fruit season, he was often associated with jackfruit and mango trees. He would sometimes appear near estates and forest-edge settlements. Despite entering human spaces occasionally, he was widely remembered as an elephant that usually avoided aggression. People in Nelliyampathy began treating his appearances almost like seasonal visits rather than emergencies. That doesn’t mean he was tame — he was always a wild elephant. But in a state where human–elephant conflict often dominates headlines, Chilli Komban represented something different: coexistence. Sadly, in May 2026, Chilli Komban passed away, marking the end of a remarkable journey through the forests he called home. Sleep well, gentle giant. You belonged to the forest — and somehow, also to everyone who watched you from afar.
