But the fate of the Reich proved unenviable, and the airport was ultimately captured by the Soviets and handed over to the Allies. During the West Berlin Blockade of 1948-1949, it was thanks to Tempelhof that the Allies were able to maintain life in the city, thus establishing the famous Airlift, when planes carrying food and essential goods landed every 90 seconds. Without Tempelhof, the city would have fallen. After the reunification of Germany, a new airport was built for a unified Berlin, and Tempelhof's fate was tragic – it was closed and plans were made to build on it. But then Berliners stepped in, managing to hack the system and defend the field through a referendum.
