Notes on our Trip to Spain / Improvising on a Riff (Saturday, February 21, 2026) Dr. Fred Moten, MacArthur Award winning cultural theorist and poet, is known for his transformative writings on Black performance, improvisation and aesthetic resistance. His presentation reflects on travel, encounter and the theme of involvement – observance rather than observation; accompaniment rather than invasion or acquisition. Modernist photographer Frank Stewart, known for his work with Jazz at Lincoln Center, presents a personal and intimate vision of jazz culture. In addition, his work extends the tradition of 20th century masters of photography including Henri Cartier-Bresson, Roy DeCarava and Garry Winogrand. Their exchange will foreground improvisation as both artistic practice and philosophical method. -Petra Richterová and C.
