Samsung Electronics has taken a significant step in the evolution of mobile video production with the launch of the Galaxy S26 series, focusing not only on technical resolution but also on the ability to convey emotional atmospheres and narratives. To achieve this goal, the company has implemented two fundamental tools: the Advanced Professional Video (APV) codec and the Cinematic Look-Up Table feature, known as Cine LUT. The path to cinematic quality begins with the APV codec, integrated into the Galaxy S26 Ultra. This technology lays the foundation for professional production on mobile devices, as it allows for maintaining high image quality and minimizing information loss during the editing process. Building on this technical foundation, Samsung has introduced Cine LUT, a feature designed to answer the question of whether any user can create Hollywood-style videos using a mobile phone. Unlike conventional filters, which simply overlay a color layer on the image, Cine LUT functions as a "map" that transforms one set of colors into another to achieve a specific visual look. According to Sugon Baek of the Camera Quality Group at the MX Business, this tool reinterprets footage recorded in Samsung Log to provide the depth and look characteristic of professional cinematography. Bomi Kim of the Reality Media Lab at Samsung Research emphasizes that the feature is optimized for Log video, leveraging its wide gradation to accurately reconstruct color and brightness, thus preserving subtle tonal details that would normally be lost with common filters. The development of Cine LUT was the result of a multidisciplinary collaboration. The Mobile eXperience (MX) division led the camera implementation, while Samsung Research handled the core video processing technologies. A critical component in this process was the partnership with U5K Imageworks, a world-renowned colorist studio. Taesik Eom, CEO of U5K, explained that the collaboration began two years ago with the development of Rec. 709 LUTs for Samsung Log video, focusing on refining intense colors to create more natural tones. To ensure quality, the team developed multiple versions of the LUTs at three intensity levels: neutral, soft, and strong. These versions underwent rigorous testing in various real-world scenes and environments, including natural lighting, indoor spaces, and day and night conditions. The goal was to ensure consistent, distortion-free color, balancing subjective preference with objective technical quality. To validate this performance, Samsung used professional tools such as color charts, gray balance, and vector scopes, analyzing each frame in detail. As a result of this analysis of the visual language of popular film genres, Samsung selected four main styles for the Galaxy S26 series: 1. Blockbuster: Designed for high-contrast environments, ideal for urban scenes and outdoor shots. 2. Coming-of-age: With a fresh and smooth aesthetic, suitable for vlogs or modern settings like cafes. 3. Romance: Adds warmth, making it the recommended option for character-focused scenes. 4. Thriller: Creates a more impactful and dramatic atmosphere. This feature allows users to preview cinematic shots at the moment of capture and apply the desired LUT to quickly share the video from the Gallery. The developers have noted that user response has exceeded expectations, as the combination of Log recording and Cine LUT has been recognized as expanding creative possibilities beyond simple filters. Looking ahead, Samsung aims to solidify the series.
