AP Precalculus 3.2 Sine, Cosine, and Tangent Overview: This lesson introduces sine, cosine, and tangent by describing them as ratios of the sides on a unit circle. Students learn that the unit circle is a circle with a radius of one, centered at the origin on the coordinate plane. Every point on this circle represents an angle measured from the positive x-axis, and because the radius is one, the x-coordinate of a point gives the cosine value of the angle and the y-coordinate gives the sine value of the angle. Tangent is described as the ratio of sine to cosine, which matches the slope of the line that connects the origin to the point on the circle. The lesson also explains standard angles on the unit circle, such as the angles that create well-known coordinate points. These angles are expressed only in radians, since AP Precalculus uses radians exclusively for trigonometric definitions and applications. Students learn how these angles repeat as they move around the circle. Finally, the lesson introduces coterminal angles, which are angles that share the same final position on the unit circle even though they may have different radian measures. These angles differ by whole-number multiples of a full rotation around the circle, so they always land at the same coordinates and therefore have the same sine, cosine, and tangent values.
