Who Decides Cambridge's Future?

A Public Debate on the Greater Cambridge Development Corporation hosted by Cambridge Past, Present & Future on 23/03/2026. The Government has launched a major consultation on proposals to create a centrally-led Urban Development Corporation (UDC) for Greater Cambridge. This new body would take over key planning functions for major developments from our local councils, shifting decision-making power from locally elected representatives to a government-appointed board. While the Government argues this will "unleash" growth and solve infrastructure deadlocks, it also represents a fundamental shift in local democracy. Decisions that currently sit with your elected city and district councillors could soon be made by an unelected body. This debate is your chance to explore whether this model will protect the unique character and environment of Cambridge or prioritise national growth targets at the expense of local voices. Opening introduction to the Government's Consultation on proposals to establish a Development Corporation for Greater Cambridge, MHCLG representative, Eleanor Riley and Beth Dugdale, Deputy Chief Executive, Cambridge Growth Company, followed by a Panel discussion and Q&A The Panel Chaired by Patsy Dell, town planner, volunteer with CambridgePPF. Nathan Vear, Environment and Sustainability Adviser, Cambridge Growth Company Bridget Smith, Leader, South Cambridgeshire District Council  Wendy Blythe, Federation of Residents Association & Friends of the Cam James Littlewood, CEO, Cambridge Past, Present & Future Beth Dugdale, Deputy Chief Executive, Cambridge Growth Company will take questions from the audience.
