The Holiday That Never Was... Caravan Prep 70kph Winds & Muddy Campsite in Rural France

Life at our old French house in Le Limousin never stands still. This week we prepare the caravan for a small family holiday, only for 70kph winds and flooding to cancel it at the last minute. I wash and clean the caravan, prepare the car, clean the tow ball, fit the towing mirrors, charge the battery and check every tyre pressure to make sure everything is ready to leave. Everything is set. Meanwhile, strong winds rip across rural France, blowing the newly fitted polycarbonate out of the greenhouse. The campsite becomes a hazard. We’re told we can still come… if we’re happy being towed in and out by tractor. In between storm repairs and school holiday chaos, demolition quietly begins on one of our old piggery outbuilding ruins as we continue restoring this property. It’s only the start, but it marks the next step in bringing these neglected buildings back into use. Inside the house, the girls take over within two days of school holidays. We play cards, Lavinia chases us out of the office, cooks camping food but only lets me smell it, and the naughty chickens make their usual appearance. This is real countryside family life in France — preparation, weather damage, small repairs, demolition beginnings and sometimes a holiday that never actually happens. Je nettoie la caravane, prépare la voiture, nettoie la boule d’attelage, installe les rétroviseurs de remorquage, vérifie la pression des pneus et recharge la batterie. Pendant ce temps, le vent arrache les plaques de polycarbonate récemment installées sur la serre et le camping est inondé. On nous propose même d’entrer tractés par un tracteur. Entre les réparations et les vacances scolaires, la démolition commence discrètement sur l’une des anciennes porcheries en ruine. Une petite étape, mais un nouveau chapitre dans la rénovation de notre propriété en France rurale.
