Basic Mountaineering Course #42-NIMAS-DIRANG

The 28 day Basic Mountaineering Course at NIMAS Dirang takes you to the deepest valleys of Arunachal.We camped at Meerathang during the last phase of BMC. The valley leads to some of the most formidable peaks of Arunachal like Gorichen,Baisakhi and Kangto.As you climb up the high pass negotiating your way through scree and loose boulders you are greeted by an alpine tarn that goes by the name of Rani Jheel. Every morning we would climb up the steep pass and reach the Gorichen glacier,hoping that the weather would allow us to climb the ice face.One of the faces of the glacier forms a 65-90 degree wall and has the reputation of being the largest ice wall of India.Luckily,the weather supported us on all days except one and we were able to train for icecraft and crevasse rescue. The Meerathang glacier looked like a frozen river originating at the peak of the mountain. At the snout, steady streams tricked to give life to the river that is locally known as "Mago Chu".
