Stone Creek to Sunk Island | Walking the Edge Uncut | Episode 10
Stone Creek to Sunk Island | Walking the Edge Uncut | Episode 10 No commentary. No edits. No agenda. Just 3 miles of walking across Crown Estate land that has, at various points in history, been defended by anti-aircraft guns, Churchill's secret guerrilla farmers, and quite possibly people in ghillie suits who I am not going to ask about. This is Walking the Edge Uncut — the full, unedited footage from the Walking the Edge of Britain coastal walk. No narration, no music, just ambient sound and open air. And on this particular day, quite a lot of heat. 32 degrees. In Northern England. In early spring. Nobody was ready for that. We cross Stone Creek onto Sunk Island — Crown Estate land, not a public right of way, but there's a large sign giving permission to walk it so here we are. And the name, as ever, is not metaphorical. In medieval times this was a much larger island with settlements and people living on it. Then it sank. There is a town somewhere at the bottom of the Humber to the right. The land you're watching me walk across only exists because of centuries of reclamation. Borrowed ground, very much on a trial basis. The history here is extraordinary. At the start of the walk there are the remains of a heavy anti-aircraft battery used in both World Wars. There's also what appears to be a Cold War nuclear bunker that doesn't appear on any known ROC post maps, isn't signed, and which I cannot identify. If you know what it is, please tell me in the comments. Quietly. Then there's the Sunk Island Patrol — one of Churchill's Auxiliary Units, set up in 1940 in case of German invasion. Mostly local farmers. Secret stay-behind guerrilla cells whose job was to repel beach landings, sabotage enemy operations, and fight until they couldn't. Life expectancy on activation — eleven days. They knew that when they signed up. Farmers are not to be trifled with. The area is still used for special forces training. I'm saying no more than that. Keep your eyes on the treeline. At the end of today's walk — 32 degrees, enough is enough — I walked straight into the Humber Estuary to cool down. Then another mile inland towards the Old Hall for road access. Birds and deer throughout, doing their thing, completely unbothered by any of the above. 📍 ROUTE Stone Creek → Sunk Island → Anti-Aircraft Battery → Cold War Bunker → Humber Estuary → Lane to the Old Hall 🥾 TRAILS COVERED → King Charles III England Coast Path → Trans Pennine Trail → Clive Sullivan Way → Crown Estate permitted route, Sunk Island 🎧 WHAT YOU'LL HEAR → Wind across open farmland and estuary → Birdsong throughout → Footsteps on banking and field paths → Distant shipping on the Humber → Alarmed deer. Again. 🎬 ABOUT WALKING THE EDGE UNCUT Walking the Edge Uncut is the raw, unedited companion to Walking the Edge of Britain — a solo 10,000 mile coastal walk around Britain by someone who has never hiked before. While the main series is edited, narrated and occasionally competent, the Uncut series is exactly what it says. Full footage. Real time. Ambient sound only — except for a brief introduction at the start.
