Overnight in a Old Jail Cell-Historic Matewan Lock Up -West Virginia
Matewan Lock-Up. It is not only a comfortable and convenient location it is a memorial to the 1920’s Mine Wars and those who lost their lives in those wars so that all miners could enjoy better pay and working conditions. The Jailhouse, which doubled as the Matewan City Hall building, is likely where Matewan Mayor Testerman and Sheriff Sid Hatfield made their fateful decision to arrest the Baldwin-Felts detectives. The detectives came to Matewan by train to evict miners families from their homes while the miners were at work because the miners were intending to join the United Mine Workers Union. The Sheriff and Mayor’s decision to arrest the detectives and stand with the miners ultimately cost both men their lives. There is no better place to stay than Matewan if you want to learn about Appalachian history. And there is no more memorable place to stay in Matewan than the Jailhouse where Sid locked up the Baldwin-Felts detectives, ie the remaining detectives that he and the miners did not kill in the Matewan Massacre on May 20, 1920. You will sleep just a few feet from where the Matewan Massacre took place. If you are more interested in the Hatfield-McCoy feud you will not be disappointed either as you are going to be staying less than a mile from where the Hatfield’s executed several McCoys.
