Independence and Partition of India - History Chapter 9, Class 10 ICSE
By the end of their rule the British realized they could no longer control India. The people of India were confident and determined to be free organizing massive strikes protests and peasant movements all over the country. Even the Indian members of the British armed forces and police began to rebel such as the famous revolt by the Indian Navy in Mumbai. This widespread unrest made it clear to the British government that they had to leave. To figure out how to hand over power the British sent the Cabinet Mission to India in 1946. This mission suggested a plan to keep India united by giving more power to the provinces but the Indian political parties could not fully agree on it. As severe communal riots broke out across the nation Lord Mountbatten proposed a new plan. The Mountbatten Plan stated that the only way to solve the crisis was to partition the country into two separate nations India and Pakistan. Although many Indian leaders were deeply saddened by the idea of dividing the country they eventually accepted the partition to stop the violence and prevent a civil war. Based on this agreement the British Parliament passed the Indian Independence Act of 1947. This historic act officially ended British rule and created the two new independent nations bringing India its long awaited freedom on August 15 1947.
