A group of Portuguese nobles seized the Ribeira Palace, overthrew the government linked to Spain, and proclaimed Dom João IV, of the House of Braganza, as king. It was the beginning of the Portuguese Restoration and the end of the Iberian Union. But how did Portugal manage to free itself from Spain? How did they achieve the restoration of independence, the restoration of the Portuguese crown, and the end of the Iberian Union? For almost 60 years of the Iberian Union (1580–1640), Portugal was under the rule of the Hispanic Monarchy, governed by the Spanish kings of the Habsburg dynasty. At the time, Spain was the largest empire in the world, involved in major European conflicts such as the Thirty Years' War and the Eighty Years' War. Even so, Portugal managed to initiate a revolt that would eventually lead to the Restoration War, a conflict that lasted almost 30 years before Spain officially recognized Portuguese independence in 1668.
