The Drum Section of a Samba School and its Details - 05/02/2016 - Jornal Futura - Canal Futura The drum section is the heart of a samba school. It dictates the rhythm and directs the singing of the members on the avenue. Reaching the point, the perfection, requires long months of rehearsals and total dedication from the musicians. If the samba school parade is compared to a popular opera, the drum section can be understood as a symphony orchestra. Surdo, tamborin, repinique, caixa. That's the base. But there are also pandeiro, cuíca, reco-reco, racoalho, cymbals, and agogô. The sound of the drum section is like the school's brand. For connoisseurs, it's possible to identify the group from the very first sounds of the drums. And the drum masters are powerful, well-paid, and highly sought after, just like football stars. Over the past 30 years, there have been many changes in the parades, and the drum sections have had to adapt to the new times: the Sambadrome, the timed parade, and the famous retreat, where the drummers position themselves during the parade, considered a high-risk movement. When the drums start playing, it's impossible to stay still. This report is by Eliane Benício.
