Volterra is a walled mountaintop town in the Tuscany region of Italy. Its history dates from before the 8th century BC and it has substantial structures from the Etruscan, Roman, and Medieval periods. This hilltop town offers scenic views of the surrounding countryside. Etruscan influence is very strong here. The town was one of the main city-states of ancient Etruria. Today, you can visit the Etruscan Museum to see a rich collection of archaeological artifacts. The town also has a beautiful cathedral and a Roman theater complex. Volterra is a popular tourist destination, known for its beautiful setting, rich history, and alabaster crafts. The town is a center for the production of alabaster carvings, and there are many shops and workshops where you can see alabaster crafts being made and purchase souvenirs. Our guided walking tour is about 2.8 miles (4.5 km) long, starts at Piazza dei Priori, also known as the Palace Square, and covers most attractions and historic sites of Volterra.
