Okimiya Shrine in particular is said to be the "sacred place where Amaterasu Omikami descended," and is said to be deeply mystical. ✨Founding and Tradition The founding year is unknown, but the 1713 publication of the "Ryukyu Country Origin Record" records that a "mysteriously shining ancient tree" was salvaged by a fisherman at Naha Port and enshrined as a sacred tree. Since then, Okinomiya has been revered as the guardian deity of safe navigation and maritime traffic, and has become a place of prayer for tribute ships and remote island routes. ✨History of Relocation and War Originally built near present-day Naha Port, it was relocated to the site next to Asato Hachimangu Shrine due to port development in 1908. The ancient main hall was designated a National Treasure in 1938, but was destroyed by fire during World War II.
