The fallout from the ballot shortage during the June 3 local elections is rapidly spreading to university campuses. Student councils at major universities, including Kyung Hee University, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, and the University of Seoul, have simultaneously issued statements condemning the National Election Commission, claiming it "trampled on suffrage and shook the foundations of representative democracy." Seoul National University, Korea University, and Sogang University have also joined the ranks of those issuing statements, while Yonsei University and Chung-Ang University are holding emergency meetings to discuss their official response. On campus, a large-format poster signed by a Korea University student calling for the defense of democracy and a writing by a Sungkyunkwan University graduate student criticizing the undermining of election credibility have been posted in succession. While students are urging a transparent investigation into the facts, accountability for those responsible, and concrete measures to prevent recurrence, they excluded direct demands for a "re-election" from their statements, fearing that the incident might be perceived as a conspiracy theory regarding election fraud or lead to conflicting opinions among students.
