As everyone knows (and not necessarily sea dogs), ships sail on water. Bodies of water, seas, and oceans have a unique characteristic: they lack drawn lines, roads, or curves. There are no trees, pedestrian crossings, road signs, or traffic lights. Nevertheless, they do have designated routes for ships. Something like the titular highways, roads, and sea lanes.
