Giữa bom đạn...một người vẫn không bỏ giáo dân | Đức cha Giuse Trần Văn Thiện
There are people… who don't appear in the newspapers, who don't speak in public… but who change an entire region. Bishop Joseph Tran Van Thien… was one such person. Amidst war and division… he did not abandon his flock. And there is something few people know: it was during those years when faith seemed to be fading… that he was the one who kept it from ever extinguishing. Bishop Joseph Tran Van Thien (1908–1989) was the first bishop of the My Tho Diocese – a silent shepherd who laid the foundation of faith for the entire Mekong Delta region for nearly three decades of turmoil. Born during the French colonial period, and educated in both Vietnam and France, Father Joseph did not choose the path of fame but dedicated himself to the mission of training priests, serving the poor, and building pastoral life amidst war, division, and social crisis. From director of the Blessed Minh Seminary to rector of the Catholic University of Da Lat, from parish priest of the rural village of Bai Xan to founding bishop of a new diocese – every step he took left a mark of faith, humility, and tireless service. Ordained bishop in 1961, he built the diocese from scratch with quiet love and unwavering faith. He established Catholic schools, hospitals, nursing homes, charitable institutions, and especially the Dong Thap monthly magazine – the first diocesan newspaper in Southern Vietnam. Despite living through the fierce war and the turbulent years after 1975, Bishop Thien remained faithful, steadfast, and never abandoned his flock. He was called by many "The Sower of Seeds Amidst Bombs and Bullets" – a quiet shepherd, without political pronouncements, but leaving a vibrant legacy of faith in the hearts of the parishioners and the priests he trained. He passed away in 1989 and is laid to rest at My Tho Cathedral – where he celebrated thousands of Masses and blessed countless lives. But his gentle footsteps still echo throughout the diocese: in family prayers, in clandestine catechism classes held late at night, and in the hearts of parishioners who always remember this bishop, "without fame but with faith." 🎧 This video is a storytelling journey, told through a deep and moving voice, leading you to the life of a quiet yet great shepherd.
