Zhuge Liang and Steamed Buns: A Historical Legend Filled with Compassion During the Three Kingdoms period, when Zhuge Liang was campaigning against Meng Huo in the south, his army reached the Lu River. At that time, the Lu River was turbulent and difficult to cross; moreover, there was a legend that an evil spirit haunted the river, and that without a human sacrifice, the army would not be able to cross safely. Zhuge Liang, of course, could not bear to sacrifice the lives of his soldiers, but he knew that the morale of his army must not be shaken. Therefore, he ordered that flour be kneaded into dough, shaped into human heads, and filled with beef and mutton, to be used as a sacrifice.
