Drum machines are everywhere, but a new movement is slowly brewing. The idea was simple: to return to real instruments played live and draw inspiration from the soul and funk of the seventies. It was in this context that an album was born that would put the bass in the spotlight: Emergency on Planet Earth. This first album by the group Jamiroquai was released in June 1993. It was an immediate success. The album went straight to number one in the UK charts. It introduced the acid jazz style to a wider audience and sold over a million copies worldwide. It all started with the singer, Jason Kay. After trying out to join the group The Brand New Heavies, he decided to create his own project. The name Jamiroquai is a blend of the word "jam" and the Native American tribe of the Iroquois. The group signed a contract with Sony Music. The lineup included Toby Smith on keyboards, Wallis Buchanan on didgeridoo, Nick Van Gelder on drums, and bassist Stuart Zender. Stuart Zender was only eighteen when he recorded this album. Born in 1974, he comes from a family of musicians. He lived in the United States from the age of seven to fifteen. Upon returning to England, he initially played snare drum in a marching band. He started playing bass at sixteen. He learned the instrument by ear, picking out all the parts of Weather Report's "Black Market" in just two weeks. It was through his sister that he met drummer Nick Van Gelder, which later led to his audition for Jamiroquai. To create the sound of this album, Stuart Zender used two main instruments. With the money his mother had given him to help him get started, he bought a four-string Warwick Streamer Stage I bass. He also owns a pink Music Man StingRay bass. In the studio, the bass isn't plugged into a traditional amplifier. It's connected directly to the mixing console with very heavy compression. This results in a very clean and forward sound. The use of roundwound strings adds brightness and brings out the fret noise nicely, making the recording very lively. We start with the first track, "When You Gonna Learn." It's not Stuart Zender playing, but Andrew Levy, the bassist from the Brand New Heavies. Here, he shows us that you can do wonders primarily with fifths and octaves. Then, on "Too Young to Die," the groove is very syncopated. You have to articulate the notes clearly and respect the note lengths, otherwise the bass line will fall flat. Next, the track "Hooked Up" is based on a fast groove with a fairly complex rhythmic structure, all built on a very jazzy chord progression. Later, on "If I Like It, I Do It," the bass line is yet another masterclass in groove. Everything is there, from the choice of notes to the subtlety of the rhythmic placement, with a perfect mastery of silence. We continue with the instrumental track "Music of the Mind." The bass line accompanies the music gently, yet remains highly melodic and precise. Next comes "Emergency on Planet Earth," the title track. The riff is played with slap bass, simply but effectively. After that, the track "Whatever It Is, I Just Can't Stop" is based on a funky bass line in E. Stuart Zender attacks the strings harder, giving his groove a heavier, grittier edge. Next, "Blow Your Mind" is a composition of over eight minutes. The atmosphere is calmer, and the bass lays down the groove more simply, but still with very precise and funky rhythmic placement. Finally, on "Revolution 1993," the longest track on the album, the bass line is very fast and technical. It is also doubled in places by a synthesizer to thicken the sound.
