Francis Gary Powers was in a Lockheed U2 spy plane flying over the Soviet Union. These spy planes had been flying untouched by the USSR given their high altitude and speed. Even though missile systems had been developed to go that high, the U-2's were only in range for a short time. Powers mission was the first to attempt to fly from Pakistan right across the Soviet Union. It was a gamble. One that didn't pay off when Powers was brought down by the Soviets.
