Bringing a Pulse of Life to the Colorado River Delta
This video describes how history is being made in the Colorado River Delta this month when the U.S. and Mexican governments release some 105,000 acre-feet of additional water into the river as part of the binational agreement known as Minute 319. The unprecedented "pulse flow" of water marks a major milestone in the longstanding efforts to bring life and water back into the depleted Delta. The unprecedented surge of water begins on March 23, 2014 and will last for several weeks. The Institute is part of a binational team of scientific experts and government officials who will monitor the event and the extent to which it helps reestablish river health and habitat. "The pulse flow is a vital part of our ongoing restoration efforts," says Francisco Zamora Arroyo, director of our Colorado River Delta Legacy Program. "We know that relatively small amounts of water can make a big difference in the health of the Delta region." As part of Raise the River coalition, the Sonoran Institute and partners are working to raise $10 million to fund essential river corridor restoration work and to purchase permanent water rights for the Delta.
