Aurel STEIN and Louis LIGETI - Secret files from Republican China

This is a story of a case of mistaken identity that happened in 1930 in Northern China, and involved the famous British-Hungarian scholar Aurel Stein and the young Hungarian researcher Louis Ligeti (a.k.a. Lajos Ligeti). The background of the story is the growing awareness of Chinese intellectuals regarding their national heritage, prompting them to lobby for banning excavations carried out by foreigners. There was quite a bit of media campaign to prevent Aurel Stein from digging in Xinjiang and, as part of these efforts, local governments were sent a directive to watch out for him. This is why the young Ligeti was investigated in Jehol Province, even though he was on the other side of the country, was much younger and definitely was not Stein. This amusing episode reveals the human side behind larger trends and events, such as colonial exploration and the rise of nationalist sentiments. --Video's Table of Contents-- 00:00 Intro 00:33 Stein and Ligeti in China 01:45 Preservation of antiques 05:42 Ligeti's perspective
