Ibbotson Tools: The Sheffield Toolmaker That Forgot Its Own Tools
Ibbotson Tools began as one of Sheffield’s great toolmaking names. Founded in 1809, Ibbotson built its reputation on cast steel, saws, files, chisels, scythes and edge tools stamped with the famous GLOBE mark. From the grand Globe Works near Kelham Island, its tools crossed the Atlantic, served joiners and craftsmen, and won recognition at the Great Exhibition of 1851. But this video tells the story of the Sheffield toolmaker that forgot its own tools. As American competition grew and railway steel became more profitable, Ibbotson slowly drifted away from the bench, the blade and the joiner’s hand. Steel melting, railway springs, lock nuts, fish bolts and industrial components began to matter more than the saws and chisels that had made the name famous. This is the rise and disappearance of Ibbotson Tools — a British toolmaker whose steel never failed, but whose business quietly became something else. #IbbotsonTools #SheffieldTools #BritishToolHistory
